Le Chateau de Chenonceau, ‘the ladies castle', is one of the most visited castles in France and is considered by many to be the loveliest. The castle includes a stunning bridge which stretches 60m across the Cher River (a fabulous river parallel to the Loire River). Over the centuries, this Renaissance building has been transformed by various ladies from a humble dwelling into a majestic palace -among which includes Diane de Poitier and Catherine de Medicis.
Chenonceau castle is surrounded by beautiful formal gardens and wooded grounds. The castle itself boasts exquisitely furnished rooms with Flemish tapestries dating back to the 16 th century, and a truly magnificent chapel. Visitors can discover the history of the castle with the waxwork museum and enjoy a fine meal at the restaurant in the old stables. They can also experience a miniture train ride down the lovely tree-lined drive or purchase wine cultivated in the vineyards of Chenonceau.
Children can take part in a quiz sheet, based on the childhood of Francois I, and discover the rich and captivating history of the chateau. This program is supported by other chateaux, such as Amboise, Villandry and Clos-Lucé, and allows young visitors to explore the entire chateau in pursuit of answers and a gift at the end.
The stunning beauty of le Chateau de Chenonceau is a definite ‘must-see' for all visitors to the Loire Valley on either a short break or an extented holiday. Its location is conveniently accessible to other touristic sites and hotels.
